Summer Issue Launch: Jewish South Africa

Waves of Jewish immigrants from Lithuania arrived in South Africa at the end of the 19th century and built thriving communities across the country. Working as traders, retailers, hoteliers for the copper mining industry and even ostrich farmers, they became an integral part of South African life. Later, some of the Jewish population also became involved in anti-apartheid activities. Overall, they have created a rich, cultural heritage, stretching from Irma Stern in the early 20th century to William Kentridge today. In addition to our special report in the Summer 2025 issue of JR, we’ll be finding out more about past and present Jewish life in South Africa with the director of the South African Jewish Museum, Gavin Morris and stylist and performer Leigh Sussman.
