Summer Issue Launch: 20th Anniversary Gala

  • Goodenough College Mecklenburgh Square WC1N 2AB (map)

We're throwing a big garden party on Sunday 10 July in central London and you're all invited! We're celebrating 20 years of Jewish Renaissance, while fundraising to support the next 20 years. Any donations made during the celebrations will be doubled in a match funding campaign that will run throughout the event on 10 July and also on 11 July. Doors open at 1pm and activities kick off from 2pm. So, what have we got in store for you?

Big name guests:

We welcome actor Dame Maureen Lipman, who appears in conversation with her daughter, the playwright Amy Rosenthal, about their experiences on and off stage and screen, both in the spotlight and behind the scenes.

Family entertainment:

There will be fun for all the family, with former Children's Laureate and We're Going on a Bear Hunt author Michael Rosen, who presents his live show full of poems and stories that'll delight all ages; as well as award-winning children's entertainer Ilana Banana, who performs all your favourite kids songs on ukulele or guitar, plus other instruments, puppets, bubbles and more.

Music and art:

Trailblazing London collective 3yin play Sepharadi and Judeo-Arabic music from the Middle East and North Africa, featuring acclaimed instrumentalists and vocalists Daniel Jonas (Los Desterrados), Carol Isaacs (Wolf of Baghdad), Sass Hoory (Tatcho Drom) and Keith Clouston (Transglobal Underground); and Sophie Herxheimer will be our resident artist, taking stories from you, our guests, and illustrating them live.

Plus much more:

Be there as the winner of the inaugural Peter Gilbert Prize for best article from the JR archive is announced, jointly awarded with the Woolf Institute. We'll also have a screen up for those wishing to watch the Wimbledon tennis finals, teamed with customary strawberries and cream as part of our afternoon tea* with a bit of bubbly. So join us in raising a toast to JR's 20th anniversary and to the next 20 years.

*Please note this is fish and vegetarian only, but not under formal kosher supervision.

Venue:

Goodenough College on Mecklenburgh Square, London, WC1N 2AB.

In celebration of our 20th anniversary, we’ve launched our first book, Age of Confidence: The New Jewish Culture Wave, which comprises five essays by experts in their fields that cover Jewish culture over the last two decades in a period that spans the attacks on New York’s Twin Towers in 2001 to the challenges of creating culture under Covid today. Interspersed with the essays are a series of archive pieces from past magazines, ranging from Mike Leigh on Arnold Wesker to Linda Grant on Saul Bellow, plus an introduction by Howard Jacobson.
